hey guys, i went and made up a quick and hopefully easy tutorial for those of you who are confused about SSS or dont know how to do it at all. this is only my first real 3D tutorial, so i hope i covered the basics. please email me about this if you have questions or concerns at alivolkmar@gmail.com. the frog head model is (c) to andrew.. hwang (i think) and the texture and subsurface work done on it was by me.

if you'd like to learn more about SSS please feel free to note me.

enjoy :B

All over a nice tutorial. It gave me much needed MR practice. Some areas were very vaguely described but this is often the case when you dont have so much experience with the software. I pulled it off in the end anyhow :)

I am not overly impressed by the Misss fast skin shader thou. In draft mode on simple object it looks good. But i tried the same shader on a poser figure and rendered it in production with default Final Gather and it turned up very plastic and didnt look realistic at all (and yes, I turned off Raytrace so thats not the cause).

you have to seriously tweak that shader-- all its doing is the math for you. in other words, you need a color map plugged in to either the diffuse, epi or both, and a subdermal. youre also going to have to paint your specularity too because thats the one thing that makes it look so plasticy. the bump is really going to help as well, so if i were you id try plugging in some textures to really make the SS work well.

a little tip about the bump before you go and make it normally--
create the bump 2D node first under general utilities and drag-connect it onto your bump shader attribute in the missfast material. for some reason, if youre using maya 7 or 6, it doesnt work correctly unless connected in that manner.

anyway please let me know if you need help-- i suffer from plastic look all the time and its very hard to get skin looking like skin. i will post an example up today so check it out later if you can :D

til then, good luck to you!

*shudders* eghhhhh Maya god damn you maya! giving me no end of problems and not rendering anything and then resulting in my failing the 3D part of the course x.x I really hate that program it actually makes me shudder, I just dont have the gift, it's why I'm doing 2D and stop motion, but you really seem to have the gift for 3D go you!

Impressive!!! It is :+fav: worthy, !!!

A few little typos, though:
_Next to the "Diffuse Layer" example picture, add a space between 'mentalray' and 'Texture'.
_Add and apostrophe to the words: 'dont' (don't) and 'wont' (won't).
_In the first sentence of the last paragraph, change 'certian' to 'certain'.

...and you're done!

At any rate, it is a nice little tutorial! Don't mean to be 'nit-picky' about the typos!
Your knowledge is increasing quite well, can't wait to see more!!!! :)
